More about me
Hello there you curious humanoid ! I sincerely hope you are one.
So here’s a bit more of my story.
I consistently gravitated toward activities like theatre, photography, shooting videos, sketching and writing as a child. A personal investment in various art forms helped me develop an interest in how people express themselves and interpret life, which led to my love for fine art.
This curiosity in others and myself was strengthened by a multicultural upbringing. I was raised in Karachi by my Pakistani father and my Venezuelan mother. Growing up in a mixed culture family helped me develop more than one world view.
After completing my A levels, I moved to Dubai and found myself in the darkroom in AUD.
I thrived in a critique based environment, and fell in love with the various methods of image making. In 2008, I graduated with a BFA in visual communication with a focus on fine art photography. I continued working as an artist and found early success as a winner of the Sheikha Manal young artist award in 2009. I started exhibiting conceptual series in Dubai and internationally in group shows, culminating in a small solo show in Dubai in 2012. After that, I took a break from exhibiting to focus on commissioned photography to earn a living using the skills I had developed, translating them to work commercially.
Today, my work has me shooting all kinds of projects from fashion shoots, portraiture sessions, luxury interior photography, as well as documenting fine art and shooting and producing fine art projects for artists based in the Middle East. I have been freelancing in Dubai for over a decade. I continue developing my fine art photography skills as well, mostly shooting a lot of analog and continue to push to be more conceptual in my work.
I have a soft spot for many photographers that challenge me technically and spark my imagination like Robert Mapplethorpe, Richard Avedon, Philippe Halsman, Cindy Sherman, Edward Steichen and Masahisa Fukase. I love the work of photographers like Erwin Olaf, Greg Crewdson and Nan Goldin. Although I don’t intentionally imitate any art photographers in my own work, I do like to learn from their imagery and visual languages.
I am focused towards interpreting my life experience through my work. My response to the pandemic has been to create mini projects for myself, and putting together my first photo book. I have also pivoted into giving online talks and workshops which has triggered a big need to learn even more about the art of photography, and I see my future as an artist as someone who not only creates, but guides others to create as well.
